The first thing you will notice about the D-Link DIR-868L is the design, which is unique among premium wireless routers. Its cylinder shape is simple and eye-catching. The connections in back look and feel a bit like those of a PC tower. This design doesn’t allow for much flexibility to do such things as placing it at different angles on a stand or mounting it to a wall. But for most people this won’t matter, since routers are all about having the connections you need and getting uninterrupted Wi-Fi. The product software is optimized to support lag-free internet access, video streaming, file sharing and online gaming. The SmartBeam technology is designed to enhance your Wi-Fi connection by blocking out wireless interference from other devices using the same frequencies, therefore increasing speeds.
This dual band router allows you to access media on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies simultaneously without losing signal, and maintaining speeds of up to 450 Mbps and 1300 Mbps on the respective bandwidths.
The simple design is nice to look at but has certain limitations. It only has two lights, the power and internet buttons, that illuminate in different colors to indicate power, WPS, boot and internet connection. This takes some getting used to since most of us are accustomed to the string of lights telling us everything is up and running.
You should be aware that this device won’t double as a media bridge or access point as many of the best premium wireless routers do. In other words, it can’t be used as an 802.11ac client for Ethernet-ready devices. However, you can still connect to the internet via Ethernet as an 802.11n client. You can buy a separate device that acts as both a media bridge and access point if those features are high priorities, but other routers include that as part of their feature package.
In addition to bandwidth power and management features, this has excellent security including comprehensive parental controls and the ability to conveniently provide guest access to the network. Each of the separate wireless networks (2.4GHz and 5GHz) can support its own guest network. Guests can share the internet connection but can only access the local area network resources that you allow them to use.
This is one of the premium wireless routers that support Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) encryption, the strongest encryption available. The firewall blocks potentially dangerous traffic with Stateful Packet Inspections (SPI) and presents a single IP address for the entire local area network using Network Address Translation (NAT). Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering contributes to the comprehensive security suite, as does VPN passthrough, which enables corporate telecommuters to connect with corporate networks using public broadband connections.
The D-Link website contains useful FAQs and blogs for customers to reference. The product includes a one-year warranty and 24/7 technical support by telephone during the warranty period. After warranty expiration, there are three available support plans you can purchase if you need extra help.
This is a great premium wireless router that provides largely uninterrupted, lag-free Wi-Fi to your devices. Having only two indicator lights may take some getting used to, but that is a minor complaint when considering all of the benefits of this device such as top security protection and fast dual band technology.
This simultaneous dual-band wireless router can help you network with excellent security features.
It only has two illuminating lights that act as LED signals to let you know its connection status, which can be confusing. It can’t function as a media bridge.
This D-Link router provides powerful security and up to 1300 Mbps of throughput on its 5GHz frequency and 450 Mbps on its 2.4GHz frequency. It’s a great device for any size home.
